Specials Days to Celebrate for the Month of February
February 2nd - is Groundhog Day. Since 1886, many people have gathered in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and elsewhere to see a groundhog climb out of his hole and predict the season's forecast. If the groundhog sees its shadow, winter will be prolonged for 6 more weeks. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, winter will end soon.
February 5th - NFL Super Bowl 46th will take place on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. New York Giants vs. New England Patriots, Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30ET on NBC.
February 12th – National African-American History Month. To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation's bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month.
February 14th – Valentine's Day! Don't forget your sweetheart with love, cupid, hearts, chocolates, cards or flowers on this special day.
February 20th – Presidents' Day, originally known as Washington's Birthday falls on the third Monday of February. While the holiday is still officially known as Washington's Birthday, it has become traditionally known as "President's Day", honoring both Washington and Lincoln, and well as all the other presidents who have served our county.
February 21st – Mardis Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras falls on February 21, 2012, is celebrated with parties and feasting, in particular eating those foods from which one will fast during Lent. The following day is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. Although Mardi Gras began as the last day to indulge in food and drink before the fasting period of Lent, it has since evolved into a big festival celebrated by people around the world.

OAT BRAN MUFFINS
(This tasty recipe can be part of a nutritious breakfast or snack.)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup oat bran
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated orange zest (outer skin of orange)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup molasses or mild flavored honey
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup raisins
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and place rack in the center of the oven. Line a 12 cup muffin pan with paper liners or spray with a nonstick vegetable spray. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, oat bran, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and orange zest. In another bowl whisk together the lightly beaten egg, molasses or honey, vanilla extract, oil, and milk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and stir just until moistened. Gently stir in the raisins. (The batter will be quite thin.) Fill the muffin cups, and bake about 16 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.

Energy Efficiency Tips:
Lower your thermostat by only 1 degree and reduce your heating bills by 3%.
Lowering your water heater temperature setting from 140° F to 120° F can reduce your water heating energy bill by more than 10%.
Use a ceiling fan to spread cold or warm air more evenly throughout the room. Remember to keep the fan direction DOWN in the summer and UP in the winter.
Keep fixtures and bulbs clean. Dirt can absorb as much as 50% of the light. Reduce your electricity usage for lighting by up to 75% just by replacing your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
In the average home, 25% of the electricity used to power home electronics such as TVs and DVD players, is consumed while the products are actually turned off. Plug home electronics into power strips and turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use.
Your dishwasher uses the same amount of water regardless of how many dishes are washed. Wash full loads. Air-dry your dishes by opening the door after your dishwasher's final rinse stage.
Be sure to wash full laundry loads whenever possible. Your washer uses about the same amount of energy regardless of how much clothing is being washed.
Between 80 and 85 percent of the energy used to wash clothes comes from heating the water. Using warm or cool water instead of hot will save money and energy and get clothes just as clean. Clean the lint filter after every load. Lint on the filter reduces airflow, so the dryer works harder and it takes longer to dry your clothes.
Refrigerators and freezers operate most efficiently when they're full, but not overloaded. Also, in the event of a power outage, foods will stay cold longer. Allow at least one inch of space on each side of your refrigerator for circulation. Poor airflow can increase your refrigerator's energy consumption by up to 15%.
